![]() Snowballs in Hell by Paul A. Hahn |
It's not really anything to be ashamed of. I just like to hide it. I mean, my mutant power isn't much...I just open little teleportational stepping disks...everyone on Young Justice knows about that. They even know about my Soulsword, the one that I call upon when in the middle of battle. It's a mystical weapon that can cut through anything...yet it has more of a psychological and magical effect than physical. And then there's that body armor...every time I call upon my sword, more of it appears on my body. It started out with just a glove to protect my left hand...now my entire left arm and shoulder is covered.
But that's nothing I'm worried about. Nothing I hide. What I do here is visit my special place...the place that, for so many years...was home. It was where I grew from a child to a young teenager...it was where I learned about my powers...and about my magiks. The place is called Limbo.
To some, it could be a scary place. I admit, when I first wound up there, I was frightened. But I was so little...and curiosity got the better of me...I explored. I learned the lay of the land over the next several years. I still find it surprising that, while seven or eight years of my life were spent in Limbo, maybe a few days passed on earth.
My brothers were worried...as were my parents. They still worry about me...I left Russia to come to the States and work with Professor Xavier...and I don't visit them often. But I'm sure it's fine. Besides, I like it here.
Even though the New Mutants disbanded, I like being with YJ...they just don't know me yet.
But I wonder what they would think if they knew of Limbo? Of the Bloodstones, of the beings that live there, of all that I learned there...Sam knows a little. He's been there a few times with the New Mutants...but the rest of them...I wonder...maybe sometime they'll find out.
Gathered around the team's briefing room table were most of the members. Robin, the team's leader, had called a meeting due to recent discoveries made at the Hellfire Club.* Impulse, Wonder Girl, Cannonball, Jade, Superboy and Arrowette sat down to learn about Robin's mission.
*(last issue)
"First, let me tell you about the Hellfire Club and what I saw," Robin
started. "Sneaking in with my...civilian identity--"
"Which none of us know," Cissie added.
"--I was able to get access to the club's computer system," he continued.
"I downloaded a good portion of all their database onto a disc. Though it
was encrypted, I've had Oracle working on getting it decoded."
"Oracle?" Impulse asked.
"I think it's his bat computer," Superboy shrugged.
Ignoring the comments, Robin continued. "As soon as they're all decoded,
I'll look it over and see what I can find that's useful. While we don't know
all that much about their activities yet, we know that they're definitely not
on the up and up."
"Linda," Sam nodded.
Superboy frowned.
"While there, I bumped into someone claiming to be Martinique Wyngarde.
I instantly figured she's a relative of this Jason Wyngarde figure Sam told
us about...the one we've seen with Linda. But she seemed to know who I was. She didn't report me to anyone, and she even seemed to be trying to help me. At the end, she made some comments that...lead me to believe she might have known I was Robin."
"If she knows who you are outside of costume and even we don't, then
something has got to be up," Jade replied.
"Hellfire Club is plenty thorough," Sam replied. "If they were trying to
find out information on YJ, Ah wouldn't be surprised if they'd figured out
all our civilian identities...well, those of us that have 'em, anyway."
Robin nodded. "That's why I'm hoping that disc will contain all the
information we need to know about them. With Red Tornado back in Chicago
with his family, I will be leaving everything up to Oracle. But just so
you're not worried, Batman won't be brought in on this. I don't want to
bother him with Young Justice business."
"Maybe we should try making a move against them," Cissie proposed.
"Instead of sitting around and waiting for them to do something, like sic
their Hellions on us again...maybe we should hit them."
"Not a smart idea," Sam responded. "The last thing we need is to have YJ
caught on camera busting into a popular and private club for the wealthy and
powerful...we don't have any reasons that we could explain to people and get
them to understand."
Robin frowned. "He's right. For now our best bet is to just keep an eye
on them, let them make the first move."
"Rob, what about word on Sam's condition?" Jen asked. "I mean, he's fine
and all...but we still don't know what really happened."
"And we're not closer to finding out for sure," Robin replied. "I've got
Oracle looking into that one, too...but so far, no luck."
"Any other points of discussion?" Superboy asked.
"Yeah," Impulse replied. "If hot dogs come in packages of eight...why do
hot dog buns come in packages of ten?"
In the middle of the briefing table, before anyone could slap their heads
(well, except Robin...he's fast), a stepping disk suddenly appeared, and
Illyana Rasputin materialized atop it.
"'Yana?" Sam asked.
But she didn't reply. In another instant, all eight members of the team
found their bodies being teleported away by one big stepping disk.
Instantaneously, the eight members reappeared elsewhere.
"Oh, Lordy," Sam smacked his head.
"What is it?" Jade asked.
"What kind of twisted place is this?" Superboy asked.
"Young Justice," Magik said, "welcome to Limbo!"
"Limbo?" Robin asked. He and the rest of the team began to look around
at their surroundings.
"Funny, it's how I always pictured hell," Cissie commented. "All the
rock, the reddish color...looks like a lot of fire around..."
"It only looks a little frightening," Sam said. "But in reality, it's
infinitely worse."
"Sam, no one's in any danger here," Illyana replied.
"How many times did Ah hear that line when we were New Mutants?" Sam
asked. "Come on, girl...take us outta here. No one wants to be here."
"How bad can this place actually be?" Superboy asked. "You make it sound
so terrible Sam. I figure there's nothing anywhere that we can't handle."
"Someone want to explain what I'm missing here?" Arrowette questioned.
"What is this...Limbo?"
"It's where I grew up," Illyana shrugged. "This is where I learned of my
mutant powers...where I got my Soulsword...where I learned how to survive.
It was my home for a long time."
"An' it's also the home to a lot of scary demons and monsters that want
nothing else but to see us dead," Sam frowned. "What were you hopin' to do
by bringin' us here?"
"I...dunno," she shrugged. "I guess I just wanted to show everyone where
I came from..."
"Where's the harm, Sam?" Jade asked. "It's just gonna be a quick
tour...besides, like Kon said, I'm sure we can handle anything that's thrown
our way."
"Right," Superboy agreed.
"Oh, are you so sure...?"
The team, caught unawares, suddenly found their senses assaulted by
intense light, blaring noise and incredible heat. The air smelled of burning
flesh and tasted of bile.
He looked up. He instantly knew where he was. It was the place that had
been his nightmare for weeks. Worse than Limbo...but Central Park. In the
sky, he saw her...Linda Danvers, the woman who he loved more than he'd ever
admit...hovering in the air, her fire wings burning brightly...
"Linda?" he asked. "Linda!"
She turned to look down upon Kon-El. Her eyes flashed the same color as
her wings. A wicked grin spread across her face. The wings grew into a
glowing creature, a Firebird...whose head opened wide and spit the wrath of
hell down upon him!
"Nooo!" Superboy exclaimed. A flick of the wrist and his photonic 'S'
shield was up, but it failed in holding the fire back. He screamed in pain
as his tactile telekinesis meant nothing...he dropped to his knees as his
flesh boiled off his bones. Tears evaporated before they could roll down his
cheeks. Finally, he collapsed, curled into a ball, and...
"You, of all people, should know nothing can wake them," a being grinned
evilly.
"Belasco..." Magik frowned, turning to face him. He was a wretched
creature, like Satan himself. "I defeated you in combat years ago, and won
the right of rule over Limbo...I rendered your powers useless here."
"Yes, you did," the creature replied. "And I have been biding my time
all these years...after you left, there was no one to keep tabs upon my
machinations. I have been rebuilding my power base in Limbo...And now, I
challenge you for possession of the Soulsword and control over Limbo!"
"You're a fool, demon," Illyana frowned. "I beat you when I was younger
and more inexperienced than I am now...I beat you without my armor or my
sword...or even my mutant abilities. What hope do you have of winning now?"
"I have the souls of seven young heroes," Belasco grinned, waving his arm
towards the downed members of Young Justice. "Their life energies now fuel
my own...and give me the strength I need to take back my rightful place as
ruler of this dimension."
"You play dirty," she replied.
"Do you accept?"
"Have I any choice?" she replied. "Once challenged, I can only agree to
it or surrender my position."
The demon's grin spread.
Illyana's eyes narrowed. In one fluid movement her sword appeared in
hand and her left arm and shoulder became covered in mystical armor. Would
she have been concerned with details, she might have noticed that the armor
had spread slightly, covering her back more than usual. "Your challenge.
Your move."
The villain made a swift motion of his hands, mumbling an enchantment
under his breathe. Strange, glowing mystic symbols flew around his waist.
"Just a precaution...so you can't teleport me in half."
"I won't need my mutant powers to beat you," she replied. An enchantment
of her own and a wave of her sword sent a blast of blue flame towards her
opponent.
He easily blocked the move with another spell. "I taught you that
move...I taught you most everything you know. But of course, not everything I know..."
The very ground of Limbo itself burst apart, arms of fire reaching for
Magik. She leapt backwards, escaping the reach of the fire.
Belasco kept his wide grin. His body began to levitate and he launched
himself towards Magik. She waved her sword at him, assuring that he'd keep
his distance.
"How long shall we play a game of parry and thrust?"
"Until I decide to end it," Magik replied. Without a motion to give a
warning of her next move, she quickly teleported herself behind him. As he
spun around, she cast another incantation, waved her sword, and caused a
green flame to fall upon Belasco's body.
The demon screamed in pain, caught off guard and unaware of the spell.
He dropped to his knees as the fire consumed his body. In mere moments, all
that remained was a pile of ash.
"You did teach me almost everything I know," she replied, standing over
the pile. "But not everything."
"...Illyana?" Sam asked as he slowly rose. The other members of Young
Justice also began to regain consciousness. "What...?"
Tears began to form under her eyes. "I'm sorry...I...I shouldn't have
brought anyone here. I don't know what I was thinking..."
"'Yana?" Sam asked once more. He received no reply, besides the warm
feeling accompanied by a teleportation disk sending him and his teammates
back home.
Illyana Rasputin remained. Wiping her eyes, she stood and shook her head.
Superboy's vision slowly returned...his eyes focused, pushing past the
pain. With his tactile telekinesis, he was generally the most invulnerable
from harm. "What...happened? Where--"
"Wake up!" Magik snapped her fingers above Superboy's face. It was no
use. The seven members of Young Justice all laid unconscious on the hot, hard ground of Limbo.
