Part Three: End Game?

The alarm clock came too soon. Dick lifted himself from the bed. His entire body ached. He hurt in places he had forgotten he had. His upper torso was covered in small nickel-sized bruises where the bullets from the Tommy gun had peppered him the night before. He groaned as he forced himself out of bed and into the shower.
Dwayne Taylor pulled his motorcycle into the alley. He viewed the man at the end of the alley with suspicion. It felt like a set-up but in his line of work everything felt like a set-up.

"Dwayne Taylor?" the man asked removing his fedora to reveal a head of red hair.

"Who's asking?"

"I'm the District Attorney, Guy Gardner," the man answered. "I'd like to make you an offer."

"What kind of offer?"

"I've been watching you and I believe you're an honest man," Guy began. "That's hard to come by in Blüdhaven. Something happened two nights ago. A man broke into the records warehouse and now Dudley Soames has a hit out on him."

"And this involves me how?"

"I believe this man has information that may help me put Soames away. I want him. My own associates have been unable to find anything. I was hoping you would help me. I need a good man on the inside. If I'm ever going to clean up Blüdhaven I'll need your help.

"Count me in."

"Hey Jack," Dick started. "I need some equipment."

"What do you need now, kid?" Jack Monroe inquired.

"Video and audio equipment."

"Why?"

"I ran into Zucco last night."

"And?"

"He's responsible for the building collapse over on Kirby Lane. If I had a video camera, I could turn him and his thugs in."

"I see. I believe I can set you up."

"About time you showed up!" Taylor growled at Dick.

"Sorry I'm late," Dick replied sheepishly.

"Had another rough night didn't you?"

Dick nodded.

"You're becoming a very popular man. Dudley Soames wants you dead and the D.A. wants what you've got on him."

"I don't have anything on him yet."

"Can I at least tell the D.A. I made contact with you and you'll turn over everything when you do have something?"

"Are you working for the D.A. now?"

"Sorta."

Dick quietly placed the video camera over the sleeping man. He softly stepped over to the table lamp and flipped the switch. His victim rolled over and continued to snore. Dick punched him sharply in the side and the man jumped.

"What?!?" the man exclaimed.

"Big Slim?"

"Yeah," Big Slim answered shielding his eyes from the light. "You're one of Soames' boys, aren't ya?"

"I don't work for Soames."

"No you don't!" Slim stated frantically. "You're that kid, the Flying Grayson. I'd know those eyes anywhere. They've haunted me for the past ten years."

"Explain yourself, old man," Dick growled.

"We were running a smuggling operation and your circus was the perfect cover. Only the owner refused to play along. So I told this kid Zucco to cause a few accidents. Stir things up a little bit. I never dreamed he'd kill anybody. That was never my plan." He covered his face with his hands. "After that I didn't want any part of it. Zucco didn't have any trouble replacing me. Soames came along and took my share of the business. He covered the murder up and in return he took my place. I didn't care I just wanted out. Now it looks like I finally going to be out for good. I'd rather you killed me than Soames anyway."

"I never said I was going to kill you," Dick stated. "Why would Soames kill you now?"

"Because you stole the file. He knows I can lead you to him."

"That's not a problem now," Soames replied as he entered the bedroom. He leveled a large revolver at Grayson. "Looks like I get to kill two birds with one stone."

He pulled the trigger and the bullet struck Dick in the chest. Dick flew out the Bedroom window and landed on the fire escape. He lay there in shock for a few minutes. He was certain the bullet had broken a rib. By the time he was able to move Big Slim was already dead and Soames was headed for the window to make sure he had finished Dick.

Dick started to attack Soames but knew in his current condition he had no chance at hand-to-hand combat. He reached for his taser but it wasn't there. It had fallen to the street below when he fell through the window. He would have to get it when he came back for the video camera. He pulled himself up to the next floor of the fire escape and began to swing up he made it to the top of the building before Soames made it to the window.

"I'll get you next time," Soames growled.

"I'm gonna git dat dubble-crossin rat," Tony Zucco declared.

"I did try to warn you," Number One replied.

"How wuz I spose ta know dat Soames would turn on me?"

"Because that's what he does, Boss," he said the last word almost like it was a joke. "He really did it well too. You do all the work and get all the blame and he gets all the money. It was brilliant."

"Why don'tcha go work for him?"

"Because after last night's fiasco, we're never going to work in this town again."

"Dat's where yor wrong Numbah Wun. We're gonna turn da tables on old Soames."

"How?"

"We know enuff about his dealins in dis town to put him away foreva. A liddle black-male and we own im. Dat should bag us enuff cash to blow dis town."

Dick lifted his left arm above his head. He winced from the pain in his chest. Jack pulled the tape tight across his ribcage.

"You know, you might live longer if you tried dodging some of these bullets instead of facing them head on," Jack stated, shaking his head.

"There's no dodging at point blank," Dick replied.

"You're lucky these are only cracked. Just be more careful. You're no good to anyone dead."

Dick nodded and pulled the mesh body armor back over his head. "If it weren't for your help I'd already be dead."

"I think you ought to know I found this earlier today. It seems Soames has hired a hitter. He wants you dead."

"That's great."

"Oh, he's also blaming you for the building on Kirby Lane. So Intergang's probably looking for you too."

Dick shook his head and grinned. "Maybe it's time to work on my people skills."

Detective Dudley Soames entered the office and slammed his door. He was obviously in a foul mood so everyone stayed out of his way. Everyone knew it didn't pay to anger Dudley Soames. Though no one ever spoke out loud they all knew to fear him. It was common knowledge that Soames was the true power in Blüdhaven.

Dick Grayson sat at a desk on the far side of the precinct. He was finishing the paperwork for day. He could see Soames through his office window. Soames lifted his phone. The look on his face grew grim and he became more agitated than before. He slammed the phone on the receiver and stormed out of the building. Dick grabbed his jacket from the back of his chair and rushed after him.

Dick followed Soames to the bank and then records warehouse. He was carrying a briefcase. At least I'll be in familiar territory, he thought.

While Soames entered the front, Dick worked his way around back. It took him several minutes to reach the back entrance and a few more minutes to pick the lock. Before he entered he changed into his street clothes with the mesh body armor underneath and he pulled the red flannel handkerchief around his face. He checked to make sure his taser was securely in place and quietly entered the building.

Once he was inside he waited a few moments while his eyes adjusted to the light. He then climbed the rows of shelves to higher ground and nimbly made his way through the warehouse in search of Soames. He found him standing between two shelves waiting impatiently. Dick set up his video camera and watched.

After what seemed like an eternity for Dick and Soames, Tony Zucco arrived. He stepped in front of Soames wielding his Tommy gun and smiling.

"Did ya bring da munny?"

Somes nodded. "What's this about, Zucco?"

"How bout dat!" Zucco exclaimed. "Da man dubblecrosses me and wants ta know what it's bout."

"What are you talking about?" Soames growled. "I never double crossed you, Zucco."

"Who else woold?" Zucco replied. "I robbed Intergang and yer da only one who knew bout it."

"I'm telling you I didn't. What could I possibly have to gain? I even pinned that explosion on the masked kid that's running around."

"If you didn't den who did?"

"That would be me, Boss," Number One stated stepping behind and pointing a pistol to his head. He reached across Zucco's shoulder and pointed a second pistol at Soames. "I decided it was time for new blood to run the 'Haven. Throw the Tommy gun over there," he commanded.

Zucco complied.

"Now Soames, pull the revolver from your shoulder and throw it over there. Then throw the piece in your boot over there, too."

Soames pulled the weapons from his person and threw them aside.

"Good. Now toss the briefcase over here."

Soames tossed the briefcase and struck Zucco. Zucco fell and Soames rushed toward his fallen weapons. Number One opened fire.

Dick decided he had seen enough and jumped into the fray. He leapt from the shelf and flattened Number One. He pulled his taser and fired at Soames. Soames dropped his revolver and fell to the floor. Zucco rose and headed for his Tommy gun. Dick gave him a roundhouse kick and dropped him.

Number One rose to his hands and knees and Dick gave him a blast from the taser. He fell to the floor immobile. Zucco started to move and Dick fired the final taser blast into him.

The entire battle had taken a matter of seconds. "At least I didn't get shot this time," Dick replied.

Guy Gardner and Dwayne Taylor waited in the alley.

"Where is he?" Guy demanded.

"He said he would be here. Just be patient," Dwayne responded.

Guy shifted his fedora to a more comfortable position and mumbled to himself. Dwayne grinned.

"I'm a busy man," Guy complained. "I don't have time for this."

"I think you have time for this," Dick replied stepping from the shadows.

"How long have you been there?" Guy said obviously startled.

"Not long."

Guy nodded "What have you got."

"Well," Dick started, "first I have this." He continued handing Guy a small videocassette.

"What's this?"

"It's a video confession of Big Slim about his connection to the murder of the Flying Graysons. It also implicates Tony Zucco and Dudley Soames in the act and cover-up. Here's the file on that." He handed Guy the manila folder he had taken from the records warehouse. "The video also shows Mr. Soames shooting me and then killing Mr. Slim."

Guy looked at the videocassette greedily.

"Then I have this," he continued as he handed Guy a second cassette. "This one has conversation between Soames, Zucco and Zucco's lieutenant. It explains the building collapse down on Kirby Lane and clears me of any involvement in that matter. You'll find all three of them handcuffed in the records warehouse."

Guy smiled as he took the second tape from Dick's outstretched hand. "You know, on the record I can't support vigilantism. Off the record, Mr. Taylor and I could really use your help if were ever going to clean this town."

Dick smiled behind his mask. He paused for a moment as he realized he had achieved his goal. He had finally gotten justice for his parent's murder. He really didn't need to take this any further.

"Well?" Guy inquired.

"Count me in."
