DCM Showcase
Election 2000: Alan Scott's Acceptance Speech

Editor's Note

Back as DCM was wrapping up its first year, the idea of election year got into my head. My original plan was to have various issues of several series detail the different presidential candidates that we were setting up. The story would cumulate in DCM Showcase #5, a double-sized jam issue detailing the various reactions across the DCM universe on Election Night. The writers had already gotten together to choose who would win the election. So, at least we had an ending planned.

For some reason, only one Election 2000 story was published. That was my Losers Week: Detective Chimp one-shot. I think the plotline faded away because other stories were taking precedence, although we went ahead and elected Alan Scott as president. The only part of the Election Night issue that was written was the acceptance speech, which Bob Young wrote over six years ago. I figure it did no good sitting on my hard drive, so here I present it for your enjoyment.

After he was announced, the victorious Alan Scott took the podium. There was a huge ovation. It lasted a long time, followed by an extended period of his supporters chanting his name. Alan Scott was by nature a modest man, a private man, but he had to admit to himself that he enjoyed this. For all his accomplishments, as a superhero and a businessman, this was one of his finest moments. He rubbed the ring that had given him him so much and smiled.

Finally, the crowd began to die down and it was time for this new leader of the free world to speak.

"Sixty years ago, I met President Roosevelt. I was very impressed by him and by the job he did. I knew that only one man in a million could do that job and do it well. He had all my respect. I've see 9 Presidents since then. I've met them all and I've respected them all. But until recently, I never dreamed I'd be one of them. But here I am!"

The crowd roared in hyperactive glee. Alan waited until the sound died down before he continued.

"I want to thank my running mate, Rex Tyler, and my campaign manager for all the excellent work they've done to get us to this point. I want to thank all the people here in this room for their time and effort. And most of all, I want to thank everyone who voted for me."

More applause.

"It's a new millenium and the world faces new challenges. We also have the chance of reaching new heights of glory. This is the greatest country in the world. But no one says that it can't be even greater still. I intend to make that happen!"

More applause.

"This country has been very good to me and now I want to see that it treats every American as well as it's treated me. I want everyone to feel that they are better off after I leave office than they are now. I'm here to serve all of you."

More applause.

"Just a few minutes ago, I got a call from Captain America. He wanted to congratulate me on my victory, and he also wanted to remind me that this is not only about me. This is not about personal glory. He reminded me that I am now in a position to do great things for the people of this great country. That's what I should be thinking about. Not about myself but about what I can do for the people that put me here. The people are everything. I promised him, as I now promise you, that I will never misplace my priorities. I will never put myself and my career above my duty to you. I will do what is right for all of you, even if it makes me enemies and hurts me politically. I will focus on improving the country rather than on seeking re-election. I'd rather be a one-term President who did what was right, than a two-term President who did what was good for my career."

More applause.

"There are problems and challenges that we'll have to overcome in the days and months to come. But I'm hoping to solve those problems with bi-partisan supprt and none of the party rivaly that has dominated politics over the past years. I learned back in World War Two that only by working together can we overcome all our difficulties. United we stand, divided we fall. One nation, under God, indivisible."

More applause.

"Rex Tyler and myself are both businessmen. We've been successful at that. We intend to bring that same business accumen to this office. We want to create jobs for the people of this country, just as we made our own business interests grow over the years. We think that our experience and success in private industry will serve us, and you, well. We will not let this country fall into a recession. I want to see more people with jobs when I leave office than there are now."

More applause.

"I hope that this new millenium will mark a special point in history. A point where the United States of America grew to new heights of glory, and where the people of this country enjoyed a prosperity the likes of which no country has ever seen. I vow to do all that I can to make this dream come true. I owe it to all of you for putting me here. I promise to repay you with interest. That is my vow. I look forward to serving all of you over the next for years. God bless America, and thank you!"

There were massive cheers as Alan Scott left the podium.

That's it for this series, but you can check out Ultimate Crisis for all of our characters together again for the last time!
