"Ollie, wake up lover, we need to get down to Department H," whispered the woman lying on the side of him. Oliver turned and stared into Heather Hudson's face. She was a very beautiful woman, Oliver had always thought so, and as he admired he had to pull her close and give her a passionate kiss.
"I want you to know, Oliver," she said, pulling from his kiss, with a very serious look on her face. "I . . . don't do THIS kind of thing often. In fact, you're the first . . . since Mac* died. It's just . . . I needed . . . "
*(Mac is James MacDonald Hudson, former leader of Alpha Flight, and Heather's husband, now deceased - Toby)
Oliver put his index finger to Heather's lips, to quiet her, and pulled her close, "It's all right Heather, I know. This isn't something I go around doing either. I have missed you, and it was nice to spend at least a little time with you again."
Heather just smiled as she pulled her naked body from the bed, smiling, covered herself with the sheet, and made her way to the bathroom. Oliver watched her sexy form slink from the room, and could not help but smile to himself.
"So what are you going to do with yourself now Mr. Queen?" asked Heather from the bathroom, as Oliver heard the water from the shower begin to run. "You know, you could always join me here."
"In the shower?" asked Oliver with a laugh, "I fully intend to do that."
Heather peaked out of the bathroom, an annoyed look on her face, "You know what I mean. You could join me here at Alpha Flight."
Oliver pulled himself from the bed, and began to walk towards her, "I am not ready for that yet. I have an unspeakable urge to roam for awhile. I am not ready to get back into the super-team rat race yet, especially with all the politics and problems you seem to have here with Department H. Reminds me too much of what I just left."
Heather held out her hand as Oliver came within reaching distance. "I figured as much. Oh well, join me at least for a day or two?"
Oliver took her hand and walked into the bathroom with her, "That beautiful, would be my pleasure . . . "
"You look very . . . rested . . . this morning," said Puck, the huge smile threatening to overtake his entire face. Heather smacked him upside his head playfully as she walked by, going over to the crowd of technicians working at the machines surrounding Sasquatch.
Oliver looked at the creature, feeling sorry for him. Heather had told him that everything had been normal just a few days ago. Sasquatch's human personality, that of scientist Walter Langkowski, had been in complete control. Then something had happened, and the creature snapped. He had ran away from this facility, and created a path of death and disaster for miles across Ontario. After his recent capture, they had brought him back, heavily sedated him, and were now performing a countless variety of tests in order to try and discover what had brought this bestial rage to the forefront.
"What the hell . . . " Oliver and Heather heard one of the scientists say. Both turned to him, noticing the complex look on his face. Several of the other scientists had joined them.
"What is it you have found?" asked Heather, concerned for her ally and friend.
"There is something inside his head," said the scientist, pointing to a x-ray that was currently displayed on the screen in front of him. The group looked in awe at the picture before them. Inside the Sasquatch's large, furry orange head, attached to the back of the skull, was a small device, with four tentacles that were stretched along his cranium like those of an octopus.
"What is that?" Diamond Lil cried in a mix of horror and disgust.
Several of the scientists slid from their positions in the group to their original areas, and began to type furiously upon their computers.
"It isn't biological in origin," said one of the scientists, as he continued to furiously pound away at his keyboard, "seems instead to be mechanical in nature. It is giving off quite an amount of energy."
Another scientist stood from his position, and pointed at a picture of the back of Sasquatch's skull. "Here is the point of insertion," he said, pointing to a large scar on the back of the creature's head.
"When . . . how . . . ." muttered Puck as he watched the spectacle with sheer horror.
"This wound isn't fresh. It had to have happened some time ago, judging by the scar tissue," said one the scientists, obviously trained with some medical expertise.
Jefferies eyes lit up momentarily as he pushed his way to one of the consoles, and started rapidly hitting buttons on the keyboard.
"What are you thinking, Maddie?" asked Lil as she came up beside her husband.
"If it is working his brain, and giving a lot of energy," Jefferies replied, not bothering to look up from his work, "it might be some type of control device. If that is true, then, possibly, it is remote controlled, and all that energy it is giving off can be traced back to the source."
Oliver, Heather, and Puck heard what Jefferies had said, and moved to his side.
"Bingo," said Jefferies. "I have a signal. With a little more effort, we should be able to pinpoint the source and follow this energy directly to whomever has caused this."
"Ollie . . . " said Heather as she turned to meet Oliver's gaze.
"I'm in, Heather . . . " said Oliver, already aware that Heather was about to ask him to join them on the mission.
Heather smiled, "Good, because I have an idea who might have done this, and if I am right, we are gonna need all the help me can get . . . "
Oliver listened puzzled. "So what is with the ‘extra help' need? Is there more to him than just mad scientist . . . "
"Yeah, well," said Heather, as she checked her suit to make it fully-powered and ready, "Myers had friends within the Department, including . . . "
"Them!" cried Puck, pointing outside the ship's hatch.
Oliver recognized the individuals from SHIELD Files. They were Wyld Child, Golden Glider, Gargantua, Porcupine, and Killer Frost. They were Omega Flight, a renegade version of Alpha Flight.
"Five on five," announced Puck as he threw himself towards Wyld Child, "I like these odds!"
Oliver watched as the members of Alpha Flight split up, each taking one of the villains. Puck took Wyld Child. Diamond Lil quickly ran towards Gargantua, eager to match strength for strength. Killer Frost seemed the perfect choice for Vindicator, with her ability to generate heat blasts, and Box seemed content to take on Porcupine. That left Golden Glider for Oliver.
Oliver found it hard to take his opponent very seriously. Here was Lisa Snart, former professional ice skater, turned bitter super-villainess, complete with golden matching outfit with mask, and gimmick ice skates. Oliver watched her skate towards him, several feet off the air, thanks to her anti-gravity skating boots. He tried hard to not laugh.
"Want to surrender peacefully?" asked Oliver, as he unholstered his Narcojet pistol slowly.
"Die!" shouted Golden Glider as she fired a stream of acid from her glove, Oliver dodged to the side, and watched the acid sizzle into the side of Alpha Flight's plane. Maybe, he thought to himself, I had better take her a little more seriously. A shot of acid to the face might not be all that wonderful.
The Glider was moving so fast on her skates, that using the pistol was going to be impossible at such short distance. Glider flung her left leg, complete with razor-sharp bladed boot, towards Oliver's head. Oliver was more that skilled enough to dodge her clumsy blow, and quickly grabbed the leg and flung it away. He then pulled her close, whispered a quick, sarcastic apology, and elbowed Glider once in the side of her head, and knocked her unconscious.
Oliver looked around to this "teammates," who seemed to be faring much the same as he. Wyld Child's youth and exuberance was simply no match for Puck's years of experience, and Oliver watched as Puck put the boy into a sleeper hold, and put him out of the battle. Porcupine was no match for Box, and Jefferies had already used his metal-controlling abilities to wrap the villain up tight in thick streetlights. Gargantua's big size was no use against Diamond Lil's combination of speed and strength, and the variety of blows she used against him soon had him beat into submission.
That only left Killer Frost and Vindicator. Oliver watched fascinated, as Heather flew circles around Killer Frost, dodging flying icicles and ice swords. Oliver was impressed with her, she had changed so much since they had first met. She had become so self-confident and self-assured now. Mac's death had brought her out of her shell, and turned her into the leader she had always had the potential to be.
Oliver decided to stop watching the flying show, and go inside the building in an attempt to find Myers. Oliver didn't have to look far, because inside the warehouse before him, it wasn't hard to find the man.
In the center of the building, was a man sitting in a chair, surrounded by countless computers. Upon close inspection, Oliver noticed the man was wired, from countless parts in his body, to the computers.
"Who are you?'" Abel Myers bellowed as he pulled his attention from the monitors to look at Oliver.
"Me, I'm just a nomad," Oliver said, trying to figure out if there was anything of danger to him here, "but Alpha Flight is outside, and they haven't taken to kindly to your messin' with Sasquatch's brain."
"Ha," said Myers, a manic look in his eyes, "Sasquatch is just the beginning. Walter was just the first. Soon, with my computers here, I will be able to control others. I will use my implants to take over all of Department X, and then . . . "
Oliver was just about ready to shoot the manic rambler when he noticed all the power begin to turn of from the machines surrounding Myers.
"What is going on," screamed Myers, "NO . . . .NO!!!!!!!!"
Alpha Flight walked through the building's front door.
"Sorry, loser," said Vindicator, holding a handful of fuses in her hand, "Seems you forgot to pay your electric bill. No plans for world domination today!"
"Walter gonna be okay?" Oliver asked as he pulled her close, and pulled his arms around her tightly.
"Yes," purred Heather, snuggling close to him, "doctors are removing the implants. They said there should be no permanent damage. " She stopped for a moment, and turned to look Oliver in the eyes. "Are you ever coming back?"
"Do you want me too?" Oliver asked, already knowing the answer.
Heather just gave him a sad, pouting look.
"Then I'll be back. I just have to go explore for a while. Mid-life crisis, and all that. I am an old man, you know."
Heather laughed and kissed Oliver passionately once more, then watched the Nomad pile back into his Pathfinder and drive away.
