This issue takes place one year prior to Generation Next #1.
Angelo Espinoza was in the training facility alongside his friend and ally Todd Rice. They had been working alongside each other as DEO agents for the past two years. During that time they had saved each other's lives on more than one occasion.

Todd had the ability to turn himself into a living shadow as well as enter the shadow dimension and bring out people's inner darkness. Angelo had about six feet of extra skin that he could use to grab, attack, or grip just about anything. He even had learned to use his extra skin to stop bullets.

They were testing Todd's abilities to transport people and things across the shadow realm. Their teammates Elizabeth and Jennifer Rourke weren't around because this was not an official training mission.

"Don't you get sick of training and fighting all the time?" Todd asked.

"What do you mean?" Angelo replied.

"Well, all we ever seem to do is fight people who really haven't done anything wrong. And when we aren't fighting them, we are in here preparing to fight them. It's getting old."

Angelo pulled his extra skin all up and looked like any normal person again.

"I can go out in public without being a freak. If being a hired goon for the DEO is the price I have to pay for that then so be it."

Todd opened a black hole underneath Angelo. Angelo fell into the into the hole and disappeared. Todd created a similar black hole on side of the wall and Angelo fell out.

"Don't do that, it's cold in there!" Angelo said.

"Sorry, it seemed like so much fun," Todd said smiling.

Todd opened a hole into the shadow realm and looked at Angelo.

"Shoot a bullet into it, I want to see something," Todd said.

Angelo fired a shot into the hole. Todd closed it off. He quickly became his shadow self. Then just as quickly returned to his normal state, but now he was holding the bullet in between his fingers.

"I am impressed," Angelo said.

"I was curious if it could work that way."

As the two stood there talking to each other the door to the training facility opened. A man in a standard DEO uniform entered.

"Is there a William Sparks in here?" the agent asked.

"How did you get the access code for this room?" Todd asked.

"The door was unlocked."

"There is no William in here," Angelo said.

"I'm sorry for interrupting," the man said as he left.

"I am getting tired," Todd said. "I am going to my quarters."

"I'll see you later then, amigo."

Angelo and Todd both left the facility. Both of them went to their quarters.

The next day, Todd, Angelo, Jennifer, and Elizabeth were on a mission. They were fighting an eight foot tall blue man who was about as big across as two men. He had white hair and horns. The team was sent after him because he was an unidentified energy spike that the DEO wanted investigated. Todd had tried to drop him into the shadow realm but the blue man had avoided all the attempts. Angelo had tried to contain him with his extra skin. Elizabeth tried to hit him with a concussive heat blast to knock him out and her sister Jennifer had tried to shock him with her electrical blast.

"Come with us, peacefully," Todd said.

"Gog, this is Scorn. Get me out of here ASAP. The mission is a failure," the blue man said.

Todd ran after Scorn, he was gaining on him when he heard Scorn yell out, "Door, NOW!!"

Todd and Scorn both ran through the glowing yellow door. It closed behind them. Jennifer, Elizabeth, and Angelo were all shocked at his disappearance.

"Where did he go?" Angelo asked.

Todd looked around him as his hands landed on Scorn. He stopped in his tracks and looked around at the room with the glowing yellow walls. Scorn grabbed his arms and pinned him to his sides. A man wearing gold armor and a gold horned helmet approached him.

"Hello," the man said. "My name is Gog."

"He was chasing the blue man known as Scorn, a yellow rectangle appeared that I heard the Scorn creature call a door. They both ran into it and they both vanished," Angelo explained.

"So, you are saying they just vanished?" Mr. Bones asked.

"Yes, sir."

"Did you happen to hear if he told anyone to open this ‘door'?" Bones asked.

"I am sorry sir there was no way to hear, the concussive pulses were too loud."

"It's okay, Mr. Espinoza. The three of you are dismissed but be on alert in case this ‘Scorn' shows up again."

The three of them left the room. Angelo went back to his quarters and laid down. He was worried for his friend. He wanted to cry because he was fearful that his best friend was dead and he had done nothing to save him.

"What are you going to do to me?" Todd asked.

"I am going to make you an offer," Gog said.

Todd was shocked. "What do you mean?"

"I know that you are sick of being a puppet for the DEO. You get sick of training non stop and attacking people and beings who have not done anything wrong. I am offering you an alternative."

"I don't understand."

"We are a group whose sole purpose is to protect meta humans and mutants from threats that wish to wipe them off of the planet. Groups like the DEO who you are currently employed by. I know for a fact that you are not happy with the way they treat Super Powered Beings so I am offering you the keys to the kingdom. A chance to use your powers for what you feel is right."

"You want me to join your team?"

"Yes."

"Against the group I am with now?"

"Yes," Gog said again.

"Do I have to kill anyone or attack innocent people anymore?"

"No."

"What about Angelo?"

"He can join us if he wants. If not there is nothing we can do."

"What do I get paid?"

"You get anything you want within reason."

"Sign me up then."

"Welcome to the Kingdom, Mr. Rice. Let us get you a quarters here on the Castle."

Angelo, Jennifer, and Elizabeth were on a mission again. The blue man named Scorn had appeared again in the same place as he was before. This time though he was in the apartment building near the street. He was in the apartment of the DEO ally known as Skyboy. Angelo had worked with Skyboy a few times. The kid was about seventeen years old. He was a powerful telekinetic who primarily used his powers to fly.

They arrived up in Skyboy's apartment. One of the yellow doors was already opened. Skyboy and Scorn were about to walk through it.

"By the authority of the DEO, I order you to stop and give your self up," Angelo said.

Scorn laughed hard at him. "Your friend Todd sends his regards."

When Angelo heard Todd's name mentioned from such a cold voice he charged at Scorn. His charging prevented Jennifer or Elizabeth form getting a clean shot at him. Before Angelo could reach Scorn and Skyboy they stepped into the yellow door and vanished completely.

Angelo hit the floor hard and cursed under his breathe. He just lay there not moving.

"It was Scorn again sir," Jennifer said.

"Were you able to stop him?" Bones asked.

"No sir, and he mentioned Todd. I think he killed him," Jennifer reported.

"Angelo, you are on leave until you are informed otherwise."

Angelo had been placed on the couch. He was just sitting there.

"To replace Angelo, I would like to introduce you to our newest agent. Her name is Cameron Chase. Her father was also an agent."

Cameron stood next to Mr. Bones. She nodded her head at the Rourke sisters.

"She has the ability to neutralize the abilities of many mutants and meta humans."

Angelo had been moved to his bed in his quarters. His mind was broken. He had lost the one true friend that he had in the DEO. Todd had saved his life on many occasions, they had fought bad guys and cracked jokes so often that they could finish each other's ideas. They even joked about being real superheroes. His identity would be Skin and Todd's would be Obsidian. And now he had a horrible feeling that his best friend was dead. What made matters worse that his best friend was already replaced by some rookie.

This was the exact moment that Angelo decided to dedicate the rest of his life to the DEO. He would find Scorn and he would make him pay for what he did. Todd would be avenged.

Angelo sat up and went over to his desk. On his desk sat a picture of him with his arm on Todd's shoulder. They were both in their DEO dress uniforms. He heard a voice behind him.

"Relax, amigo. I'm ok. I just got a better offer with the same group Scorn is with."

"Are you for real or just a ghost?"

"I'm real. I got a deal to help metas and mutants. Offering sanctuary onboard a huge ship. My room is bigger than three rooms here."

"I was worried about you, amigo."

"Why don't you join me with them?"

"I can't. I owe the DEO too much," Angelo said.

"It's your loss, amigo. Don't worry. I'm okay. You can get back to your work. Door."

A glowing yellow door appeared and Todd walked through it. Angelo sat there at the desk looking at the picture. He felt a pain of regret wishing that he had went with his friend but his loyalty to the DEO was just too great. In his mind he knew that he would run into Todd Rice again. Hopefully the next time they met though they would still be on friendly terms.

"I will see you later, amigo," Angelo said to himself.
