Rage

Elvin Holliday didn't ask to be born black. He didn't ask to be hated for the color of his skin. He never asked to be harassed by his classmates. He didn't ask to be attacked by a group of neighborhood bullies when he was going to see a friend to trade a few comic books. He really didn't ask to be forced to hide in a ditch filled with radioactive waste. Yet Elvin Holliday received all of these things and Elvin Holliday woke up a changed eleven-year-old boy.

Elvin had always been scrawny and small for his age. When he woke up this morning he had a body that would make Mike Tyson run in fear. He was tall, muscular and powerful. Elvin Holliday didn't ask for any of this. However as long as he had it, a few bullies were about to learn a lesson. He would teach his neighborhood today. Tomorrow he would teach the world.

Steve Rogers woke up in his recliner. His soft robe was his only covering. He checked his communicator to make certain it was still operating then reached over to his remote control. He flipped the power switch and television came to life. He absentmindedly surfed through the channels not really interested in what was on. As he passed through the cluster of news channels something in his mind clicked when he saw a masked man holding a pair of children upside down.

He dropped the remote on the floor as he rushed to pull on his costume.

Elvin Holliday now stood at seven feet tall. He weighed in at around 480 pounds. He was a solid mass of muscle. His skin was dense and hard as a rock. He was wearing a ski mask that had been to big for him days ago but was now stretched tight against his face. He wore a denim vest with the word RAGE painted across the back. It was too small to button in the front. The blue jeans he wore were also tight and only covered him just below his knees. As he strolled through the neighborhood that day he felt invincible.

In the distance he saw two boys riding their bicycles. In the past these boys would have rushed him as soon as he came into view. However when they saw the giant walking through their neighborhood they began to ride the other way. Elvin was surprised that his new body was also fast. He caught the fleeing boys with very little effort.

He tossed the boys aside and crushed their bikes into paperweights. Then he turned his attention to them. The boys tried to run but weren't quick enough. Elvin grabbed each one by a leg and held them upside down.

"So you like to bully the little black boy," Elvin boomed.

"He was stealing comic books," one of the boys declared.

"Yeah," the other one agreed.

"HE WAS NOT!" Elvin roared.

Elvin began to shake the boys when the sound of sirens it the streets. A patrol car skidded to a stop in front of Elvin and two officers jumped out and leveled their pistols at him.

"Drop those boys!" one of the officers commanded.

Elvin started to let the boys go when a news van pulled in behind the patrol car.

Maybe I'll teach the world today, Elvin thought.

"These boys attacked a little boy yesterday. They attacked him because he was black," Elvin called out to the reporters. "Today they are being punished."

"I'm going to tell you one more time to drop those boys," the officer repeated.

"It's just like you to take the white boys side!" Elvin yelled.

"This isn't about black or white," the officer responded. "It's about right and wrong."

"So it's right for these boys to push around a black boy, huh?" Elvin snarled.

"You're bigger than them," the second officer offered.

"They were bigger than the boy they attacked," Elvin returned. "Seems like a fair trade to me."

The police officer growled. "Drop those boys now or I'm going to open fire."

"Get in closer," the reporter told her cameraman.

Elvin lifted the boys higher and began to shake them again. The boys' faces were already red from the blood rushing to their heads. Both of them were terrified.

"Get a close up on the faces!" the reporter directed.

"Get them out of here," the first officer said to the second one.

The second officer went over to the news team. "I'm going to have to ask you to leave."

"That's right, hide the truth, Copper!" Elvin called out.

"We have a right to be here!" the reporter insisted.

"We had this situation under control before you two showed up," the officer stated. "In case you haven't noticed we are dealing with a meta-human here. All we want is to get those two boys to safety. So please pull back."

The reporter shrugged at the officer's word and indicated to the cameraman to shut down. They both got back into their van and drove back down the street.

"That's just great!" Elvin called out to the reporters. "Just leave me hanging." Then he lifted one of the boys to eye level. "Leave ME hanging. Get it?" he snorted.

As soon as the news van was out of sight, the first officer aimed his weapon and pulled the trigger. The bullet bounced harmlessly from Elvin's chest.

Elvin's eyes were wide with shock. "You could have killed one of them!" he cried out and dropped the boys. Both boys tried to run but couldn't because of the loss of circulation in their legs. They still crawled away as fast as they could.

Elvin charged the two officers. Both officers opened fire but the bullets had no effect on Elvin's dense flesh. Soon their pistols were harmless balls of steal. Both of the officers ran in fear down the street. Elvin pushed the patrol car aside and started to pursue when he saw someone coming toward him.

Captain America started running at the end of the street. He bull rushed Elvin with everything he had. With his shield in front he struck Elvin in the chest and Elvin went flying backwards down the street.

"That hurt," Elvin said. "Now the defender of justice is going to take the white boys' side."

"No one wants to hurt you," Cap declared. "Let's go talk this out."

"Talk?" Elvin cried out. "When those boys stole my book bag and destroyed my homework the teacher wanted to talk. When those boys called me names and stole my clothes during gym class, the school counselor wanted to talk. When those boys beat me to a pulp at lunch, the principal wanted to talk. When those boys spray-painted nigger all over Granny Staples' house, the police wanted to talk. Now when they bully me again and turn me into a freak, you want to talk. I'm finished talking. It's time to act."

Elvin turned to walk away.

"Rage!" Cap called to him. "Stop!"

"Go away, Captain America," Elvin said sadly. "You're no hero. You're just another white man trying to push me down."

Cap ran around Rage and stood in front of him. "Wait!" he commanded.

"No!" Elvin roared as he punched Cap. Cap flew through the air and landed on a side street.

"He's strong and he's angry," Cap said to himself, "and he obviously has the mind of a child. Fighting is only going to make matters worse."

Cap looked around and finally located a small girl eating ice cream in her front yard.

"Excuse me, little girl," he said, "do you know where I might find Granny Staples?"

Cap ran up the sidewalk to the cottage-style house. He ran to the front door and knocked on it.

A portly elderly woman opened the door. "May I help you?" she asked in a sweet frail voice.

"Yes ma'am," Cap replied. "I was wondering if you are the woman known as Granny Staples."

"Yes, that's me," the woman responded. "Who are you?"

Cap was somewhat startled that the woman didn't recognize him. "I'm Captain America."

"Oh!" Granny Staples declared. "Captain America is standing at my door. Wait till I tell the others." She reached around behind her and grabbed a white cane. It was then that Cap realized she was blind.

"Do you have a grandson that been having trouble with bullies?" Cap asked directly.

"Yes, Elvin lives here with me," Granny answered.

"Is he here now?" Cap asked.

"No! He went out earlier."

"Do you have a television?" Cap asked in haste.

"Yes. Elvin likes to watch it," Granny replied. "It's in here."

Cap stepped into her home and turned on the television. He flipped through the channels until he found the story he was looking for. "Listen to this voice," Cap requested. "Tell me if this is Elvin."

The television displayed Rage standing in the center of the street. "Come out Brian! Come out Jack! Come out and play!"

"That sounds like Elvin," Granny said. "Though his voice must be changing because it sounds deeper."

"Granny, how old is Elvin?" Cap asked.

"He's eleven," Granny shrugged.

"I need you to come with me. Elvin could be in trouble," Cap stated.

"Let's get moving," Granny said and headed for the door.

Cap was amazed. He didn't realize that a portly elderly blind woman could move that fast.

"Are you coming?" Granny called as she went through the front door.

Rage was still standing in the center of the street when Cap and Granny Staples arrived. The same news crew had returned and the police had blocked off both ends of the street. Elvin was calling out to the news crew and it appeared to Cap that he was just putting on a show. He wasn't violent or trying to hurt anyone but Cap knew how quickly that could change. He also knew that someone would be called in to handle this young meta-human and he doubted it would be the Avengers. He needed to move quickly.

"Do you have a mega-phone?" he asked the first police officer he came to.

"Sure Cap!" the officer replied. He handed Cap the mega-phone.

"Here Granny!" Cap said as he handed her the device. "Talk through this."

Granny grabbed the mega-phone and her frail sweet voice took a demanding tone. "ELVIN HOLLIDAY!"

"Granny?" the boy said in shock.

"What do you think you're doing young man?" she called out.

"I was just . . . " he paused as if trying to come up with an excuse.

"Just what?" Granny asked obviously annoyed.

"I just wanted to get even," Elvin answered sadly.

"Is that how I raised you?" she scolded. "To get even?"

"No, Granny!" Elvin moped.

"What did I teach you?" Granny asked sternly.

"Turn the other cheek, Granny!" Elvin mumbled.

"That's right!" Granny replied proudly. "Now let's go home. You're grounded, young man."

"Aw Granny!" Elvin complained.

"Wait just a minute ma'am," one of the officers corrected. "He assaulted two officers and two children today. He has to go with us first."

"He did what?" Granny said in shock.

"Hang on Granny," Cap said. "Do you think you can release the boy into my custody?"

"This is more your area," the officer said gratefully. "Just make sure he stays out of trouble."

Later that evening, Cap and Elvin were sitting on Granny's back porch.

"You're not an ordinary eleven-year-old anymore." Cap explained. "You're probably not going to live an ordinary life ever again."

"I know," Elvin said.

"You're also going to have to act more responsibly," Cap continued. "You could have hurt those boys today. That's not acceptable."

"I know," Elvin repeated.

"I have two boys that I'm training right now," Cap told him. "They're both a little older than you but they're still learning to use their powers. Would you like to join them?"

"Sure!" Elvin said excitedly. "As long as they don't try to push me around."

"Deal!" Cap said.

Cap rode his motorcycle up the Inter-state. As he rode along a flash of energy jumped in front of him and bounced to the other side of the median. A Semi-truck hit the flash and knocked it several miles down the road. The truck was unharmed and continued traveling. Cap pulled over and watched the bundle of energy bounce back toward him.

When it finally stopped in front of him it was a young man surrounded by strange colored bubbles and wearing a tight blue and yellow costume.

"Hello, Captain America!" the bundle said. "My name is Speedball. Word has it you're training young heroes."

"Oh no!" Cap sighed. "Not another one."

Next: Speedball. Nuff said.
